Dancing through the aisles to the smooth music and bright lights and inviting audience members to dance, the Mighty Viking Players were having the time of their lives.
After three days of standing ovations and thunderous applause, Mamma Mia was a wrap. On April 4-6, the Mighty Viking Players presented Mamma Mia!, a musical about finding yourself and rekindling the past.
“My most memorable experience was the lift in ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme,’” said freshman Brooklyn Gobble, who played Sophie Sheridan “I had to learn to trust my peers.”
The lead, Sophie, invites her three potential fathers to her wedding. Upon finding this out, her mother, Donna, played by senior Alexa Henerd, is not thrilled.
“I had so much fun developing the role and acting it out on stage,” said Caleb Craiger, who played Harry Bright, one of the dads.
The pop phenomenon ABBA wrote all of the music in the show. Some hits include “Dancing Queen,” “SOS”, “Slipping Through My Fingers,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and, of course, “Mamma Mia”
“The song that allowed me to be the most self-expressive was The Winner Takes It All,” said Henard. “Each verse was a collection and array of many emotions, going from sadness to anger to acceptance, slowly growing to accept what my character, Donna, was going through [and] what her past lover, Sam, put her through. It was the climax of the show each night it was performed.”
The show, of course, would not have been possible without countless helping hands.
“Mamma Mia, and all musicals, was only possible because everyone came together and worked hard,” said director Amber Davis. “There is not a single person who can take credit for that.”
Rehearsals for the show began in January, and the entire cast and crew worked tirelessly until opening night. Overall, the musical was a hit, with a full house each night.
“It was very enjoyable and all the people involved were very talented,” said freshman Hank Scanlan, an audience member.
