Every Friday afternoon, both Regina Roberson and Ginny Swaggerty’s fourth period classes go to several classrooms around the school to collect recycling.
“Slone started it as part of [the Teens Supporting the Environment club], but they just couldn’t meet very often to collect the recycling,” said Roberson. “Mrs. Ginny and I decided to pick it up.”
Throughout this project, students get a chance to learn about environmental health and community involvement. For them, it’s “a great opportunity for our kids to learn work skills,” said Roberson.
“It helps our community,” said sophomore Mikayla Boldt. “A bunch of people just throw trash out on the streets and that’s not helping our wildlife.”
The students walk door-to-door to collect items such as paper, plastic, and cardboard. While collecting the items, they get to interact with teachers and other students who support their cause, ultimately learning more about their peers.
“I feel like it provides a lot of togetherness and everyone gets to feel included,” said senior peer tutor Kynzee Davis. “That doesn’t happen very often, and everyone doing something for the school makes everyone feel good.”
