On Tuesday, Feb. 4, both the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams took on the Patriots at Sullivan East High School. Both teams took home wins, but the girls had a hard-fought game.
The last time the girls played East, the final score was 63-24, with the Lady Vikings stealing the win. Considering how East played last time they met, the girls team expected a similar score.
“I don’t think any of us were expecting it to be that close, especially because when we played them at home, we beat them by 30 or 40,” said senior point guard and wing Chase Wolfenbarger. “They played really bad against us [last game].”
With the game neck-and-neck, the regular game ended with a score of 59-59. As the buzzer went off to end the second half, the girls took time to recover and prepare for the next four minutes.
“It’s a new game. Restart. Just clear your mind and play how we know how to play,” said sophomore point guard Addie Wilhoit.
As they entered into overtime, their goal was to prove that they were the “better team, and having this four minutes instead of one minute [was] going to be able to show that,” said Wolfenbarger.
After overtime, the girls had indeed proved their point. Holding a ten-point lead at one point and finishing with a score of 72-68, Tennessee High took home the win in this conference matchup.
“Even though it wasn’t the prettiest game for us—we didn’t place the best we could’ve—but a win is a win, and we will celebrate any win we get,” said Wolfenbarger.
