Trivia knowledge flourishes as the Scholars’ Bowl team, a newly-established academic group, begins preparing for their debut appearance in the East Tennessee PBS’ Scholars’ Bowl competition this September.
In a game-show style match, the team will compete on air against local schools, such as Science Hill and Greeneville, about topics ranging from mythology to sports to win the Scholars’ Bowl Championship trophy and a cash prize: an ambitious goal that drives the team.
“We put together a group of intelligent people with different specialities,” said junior Luke Sah. “And together, we can learn so much more than [we have] before.”
Similarly to the Scholar’s Bowl members, the team sponsor, librarian Shannon Silvers, is driven by the passion to compete. In her high school days, Silvers was a member of her high school’s Scholar’s Bowl.
She enjoyed being involved in something challenging and competitive, but looks back at her time wishing her team had practiced more.
This brings her to her goal for members this year: to practice frequently and improve their cultural knowledge, all while having fun.
“If your head is filled with random information, this team is for you,” said Ms. Silvers.
