Since its creation last year, STEM club has branched out into every local elementary school in order to promote science education for students and provide them with an avenue to further their education.
Each week, students form groups and prepare a lesson in either chemistry, biology, engineering, or math. Then, using their own supplies, they teach it at the elementary schools’ after school programs.
“Our goal is to get kids at the elementary age to enjoy and be engaged with science,” said sponsor Julie Bittinger. “We’re 100% focused on community outreach and fostering learning opportunities.”
As beneficial as it is for the elementary students, it’s also an enlightening experience for the club’s members.
“I feel like it’s made a big initiative for both the young students and for us,” said senior Ricardo Cortez. “I feel included by sharing what I’m passionate about with these kids and they enjoy learning it.”
