“What is kindness?” asks Rachel’s Challenge club sponsor, Candace Sutherland.
According to Rachel Scott, a victim of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, kindness is a way to change people’s lives in the school environment. The non-profit organization was created in her honor.
For Tennessee High, the Rachel’s Challenge club carries on her vision by uplifting fellow students.
“Even small things, like writing positive messages on sticky notes to put up around the school,” said senior Emma Gilbert.
Sutherland is currently looking for new members to join and bring in fresh ideas for the club. She hopes both teachers and students become interested in helping her continue the legacy of Rachel’s Challenge.
“Start a chain reaction,” said Sutherland. “You have the power to affect other people with how you act.”
